| 1998 was a busy year for Project Archaeology! University of South Alabama archaeologist Ashley Dumas and educator Anne Dalton held a successful Project Archaeology workshop on June 25 and 26. Sponsored by the South Alabama Research and Inservice Center (SARIC), the workshop was attended by 14 enthusiastic teachers from Mobile and Baldwin counties. They were very responsive to the multidisciplinary aspects of the lessons and had a good time with the hands-on activities. The Center for Archaeological Studies, on the main campus of the University of South Alabama in Mobile, proved to be a stimulating setting in which to learn about the science of archaeology. The teachers viewed a slide presentation of local archaeological projects and enjoyed a tour of the artifact processing laboratories. |
| The winter of 1998 saw participants of the 1997 workshop practicing their new knowledge in the field. Traci Cunningham (Bay Minette Middle School), Teresa Tarleton (Dunbar Middle School, Mobile), and her brother Frank Tarleton dug with staff members from the Center for Archaeological Studies at the 18th-century British-colonial Rochon Plantation in Spanish Fort. |

Project Archaeology facilitator Anne Dalton (left) also stopped by to lend a hand. All were eager and much appreciated volunteers! Hopefully, similar "hands-on" experiences can be scheduled for workshop participants! |
