| In late June educator Anne Dalton and archaeologist Bonnie Gums presented the 2002 Project Archaeology workshop to teachers from the Mobile and Baldwin County public school systems. Project Archaeology was again hosted by the Center for Archaeological Studies (CAS) at the University of South Alabama (USA), and sponsored by the South Alabama Research and Inservice Center (SARIC). |

Our agenda was similar to last year's spending the first day at the USA archaeology lab discussing concepts and processes of archaeology. Dr. Philip Carr, CAS Associate Director, gave his introductory slide show What is Archaeology?. Ann presented lesson plans, CAS archaeologist Sarah Mattics taught participants how to make cordage as an experimental archaeology activity, and Bonnie gave a slide presentation on excavations in the Mobile area. USA student Tara Potts talked about careers in archaeology and her future plans. We ended the afternoon with a tour of the archaeology lab. |
| On the next day workshop participants and facilitators, joined by CAS staff member Leann Staton, traveled up to the site of Old St. Stephens in Washington County. CAS archaeologist George Shorter, director of the Old St. Stephens dig, gave us a tour of the excavations at the Globe Hotel. We worked alongside members of the Expedition 23 sponsored by The Alabama Historical Commission and The Alabama Museum of Natural History, and joined them for lunch in their outdoor mess hall. It was a fun trip. |
