Educator Anne Dalton and archaeologist Bonnie Gums facilitated this year’s Project Archaeology workshop. Four teachers from the Mobile and Baldwin County public school systems Project Archaeology attended the workshop held at the Center for Archaeological Studies (CAS) at the University of South Alabama (USA), and sponsored by the South Alabama Research and Inservice Center (SARIC).

On our way to the site of Old St. Stephens.

Our agenda was nearly identical to last year’s successful workshop. Day One at the USA archaeology lab focused on concepts and processes of archaeology. Dr. Philip Carr, CAS Associate Director, gave his now famous talk “What is Archaeology?”. Ann and Bonnie presented lesson plans including “It’s in the Garbage” and “Chronology: The Time of My Life, and Sarah Mattics showed the teachers how to make cordage. Bonnie gave her now famous slide show on CAS digs, and USA student John Bongino talked about careers in archaeology and his plans for graduate school. We ended the day with a tour of the archaeology lab.
On Day Two we made an excursion to the “Expedition 24” excavations at Old St. Stephens sponsored by The Alabama Historical Commission and The Alabama Museum of Natural History. George Shorter, director of the dig, showed us ongoing excavations at the Globe Hotel, and we spent several hours digging alongside Expedition members. Although it was unbearably hot, we all had a good time.
