teachers in training - 2000

On June 21 and 22, 2000, another successful Project Archaeology Workshop was held at the Center for Archaeological Studies (CAS) at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. The workshop was sponsored by the South Alabama Research and Inservice Center (SARIC). Twelve teachers from the Mobile and Baldwin County public school systems attended the workshop, which was presenter by educator Anne Dalton, CAS archaeologist Bonnie Gums, and CAS staff members Debi Lawrence and Sarah Mattics.

The first day was spent at the archaeology lab on the University campus. We discussed "Fundamental Concepts" and "Processes of Archaeology" introducing activities that can be used in classrooms. Facilitator Sarah taught participants how to make cordage as part of the "Experimental Archaeology activity. Facilitator Bonnie Gums gave a slide presentation on excavations at the Spanish Fort earthworks and the colonial-period Rochon plantation site. We ended the afternoon with a tour of the archaeology lab and curation facilities. Participants saw artifacts from some of our excavations including Old Mobile, the French village on Dauphin Island, and the Rochon Plantation.

On Day Two, workshop participants and facilitators Anne and Debi got their hands dirty when we helped out with excavations at Fort Morgan, site of the 1864 Battle of Mobile Bay. "Expedition 22 - Fort Morgan Revisited" is an archaeological field program for persons of all ages that is jointly sponsored by The Alabama Historical Commission and the Alabama Museum of Natural History. CAS archaeologist George Shorter, who is directing the Fort Morgan excavations, gave us a tour of the site. Then workshop participants enthusiastically helped with excavating units, screening for artifacts, and sorting materials in the lab setup in one of the fort's casements.

At noon, participants joined Expedition members for a great lunch prepared by Camp Director Rosa Newman at her well-equipped outdoor mess hall. The afternoon ended with discussions of "Issues in Archaeology," filling out workshop evaluation forms, (we got rave reviews!), and the presentation of Certificates of Completion. Everyone had a great time.
