49: First Medical School in Alabama.
Location: NW corner of St. Anthony, at Warren.
Text: The first medical school in Alabama, and the thirty-fourth in the United States, was
established on this site in November 1859. Dr. Josiah Nott, founder and first chief of
surgery. It closed in 1861 at the outbreak of the War Between the States and did not
reopen until 1868. The medical school continued until 1920 when it was moved to
Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Dunbar public school currently utilizes the building.The Medical Society of Mobile County, Inc.,
November 1991, to commemorate the 150th
