Blacksher,
Menefee, and Stein Records Abstract Filed
in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Alabama in March 1980, this
lawsuit pitted the Sierra Club against the Dauphin Island Property Owners Association, the
Federal Highway Commission, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the state of Alabama.
Citing environmental protection laws, plaintiffs sought to stop the construction of a new
bridge to Dauphin Island (the old bridge had been destroyed by Hurricane Frederic). The
material contains no record of the courts ruling. However, the bridge was
constructed.
