The winner of this year's award is Jake Howell.

Jake comes to USA  from Southside Alabama. During his time at South, Jake was involved in number of campus organizations, including the Honors Program Organization, Biology Student Association (BSA), Mortar Board, and PUR College Ministries. He served as fundraising coordinator and president for HPO, vice-president of BSA , historian for Mortar Board, and worship leader for PUR.  He also served as a Supplemental Instructor (SI) in the Biology Department SI every semester since spring 2011.

Jake also worked on the staff of USA's student newspaper, The Vanguard.  He started writing for the JagLife section during the fall of his junior year and was hired as JagLife Editor in the summer between his junior and senior years and served in that capacity until graduation.  The Vanguard's Editor-in-Chief, submitted three of his articles for the Society of Professional Journalism's Mark of Excellence awards this spring and he won second place for column writing in our region, which includes Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina.

Other awards Jake has received include the 2012 SI of the year, an 2011 Outstanding First-Year Spanish student recognition, and the 2011 USA  Endowed Scholarship in Biology.

When asked about why USA?  Jake had this to say...   "What originally attracted me to South was the Honors Program. It's a fairly small program when compared to those at Auburn or Alabama and it offered me the chance to actually make friends before ever setting foot inside the classroom. Once down here, though, I fell in love with the school and the surrounding area".

Jake will be attending the University of Mississippi in the fall of 2013 to work on a Master’s degree in Biology.  He will be working with Dr. Tamar Goulet and specializing in coral reef ecology.  Dr. Goulet’s lab specializes in the relationships between corals and their symbiotic algae.  After earnig his Master’s, Jake plans to pursue a Ph.D. and continue to work with corals and conservation. Ultimately, he aspires to a career in academia.

All of us in the Biology Department wish him the best of luck in his future pursuits.  Go Jake!
