RESEARCH ACTIVITES AND INTERESTS

My current research focuses on the role of Angiopoietin-1 in tumor growth and vasculogenesis. Angiopoietin-1 is a secreted protein known to prevent the formation of ‘leaky’ blood vessels as well as to act as a chemoattractant for smooth muscle cells and pericytes. Recent research has been filled with controversy over the actions of Angiopoietin-1 in tumors. Some studies show Angiopoietin-1 promotes tumor growth while others demonstrate an inhibitory effect on tumor growth.  Currently immunoblots are being used to determine the presence of Angiopoietin-1 and its receptor Tie-2 in various mouse and human cancer cell lines. In the works are an immunohistochemical analysis and future plans for determining the effect of Angiopoietin-1 on experimental metastasis and tumor growth through transfection of Ang-1 cDNA and shRNA into the various cell lines.
