Dr. Shawn Mitchell

Dr. Shawn Mitchell is an Instructor of Geography in the Earth Sciences Department at the University of South Alabama. She earned her B.A. in anthropology and Ph.D. in geography, both from LSU. Latin America is her regional specialty and she did her dissertation fieldwork in Honduras where she researched the diffusion of Protestantism. In recent years, she has focused on topics closer to home. Her interests range from historical topics like 19th century yellow fever quarantine laws to contemporary issues like the resettlement of Unaccompanied Alien Children from Central America. She is currently evaluating the use of GIS in dealing with Mobile, Alabama’s municipal stormwater issues. When she isn’t teaching, you can find Dr. Mitchell kayaking in Mobile Bay.
