Math 202 syllabus
Mathematics for Elementary Teachers II
Bulletin Course Description:
Topics covered are those that a prospective elementary or middle school teacher should expect to encounter in the teaching of geometry in elementary or middle school. Topics include geometric shapes, measurement, triangle congruence and similarity, coordinate geometry, and geometric transformations. NOTE: MA 202 does not fulfill graduation requirements for any curriculum other than College of Education and Professional Studies.
Prerequisites: C or better in MA 110 or MA 112 or higher level course.
Calvin T. Young, Duane W. DeTemple, and Richard S. Millman: Mathematical Reasoning for Elementary Teachers: Pearson, 7th edition, 2015 (ISBN 126973072X).
Calculator: A Texas Instruments TI30XII-S scientific calculator is required.
- Students will develop definitions of two- and three-dimensional geometric figures, and explore their properties by making and confirming conjectures.
- Students will develop area formulas for polygons and circles, and be able to explain the meaning of pi.
- Students will make and verify conjectures about properties of polygons: sum of polygon angles, number of diagonals, side lengths of triangles and relationship between side lengths for right triangles, etc.
- Students will learn the key ideas and standard units of measurement, and accurately measure objects and angles.
Topics & Time Distribution:
By assuming the total of 13 weeks, the instructor is given an extra week and a half to use for tests, emphasis on certain topics, etc.
|Chapter 8||Algebraic Reasoning, Graphing, and Connections with Geometry||1.5 weeks|
|Chapter 9||Geometric Figures||4 weeks|
|Chapter 10||Measurement: Length, Area, Volume||4.5 weeks|
|Chapter 11||Transformations, Symmetries, and Tilings||1.5 week|
Detailed Schedule: Below are the essential sections which should be covered by all instructors:
Chapter 8: 8.2, 8.3
Chapter 9: 9.1, 9.2, 9.3
