Master's of Educational Leadership (Instructional Leadership) for K-12 Administrators

Candidates must meet full admission to the Instructional Leadership programs listed below before enrolling in any instructional leadership courses in the program. The Educational Leadership or School Leadership program consists of three certification options for prospective administrators.

Option 1 – Leads to Master of Education (M.Ed. Degree) and Instructional Leadership Class A Certification

This program option is available to the student holding a Bachelor’s Degree with a valid Class B Teaching Certificate and a minimum of 3 years teaching experience. Upon successful completion of the 30-hour program of study and the appropriate Praxis Exam, the candidate is awarded a Master of Education Degree in Instructional Leadership P-12 and is eligible for an Alabama Class A Certificate.

Course of Study

Option 2 – Leads to 30-hour Instructional Leadership Class A Certification

This program option is available to the student holding a Master’s Degree, a valid Class B Teaching Certificate, and a minimum of 3 years teaching experience. Upon successful completion of the 30-hour program of study and the appropriate Praxis Exam, the candidate is eligible for an Alabama Class A Certificate in Instructional Leadership.

Course of Study

Option 3 – Leads to 18-hour Instructional Leadership Class A Certification

This program option is available to the student holding a Master’s Degree in Education with a valid Class A Teaching Certificate and a minimum of 3 years teaching experience. Upon successful completion of this “Reduced Hour Option” and the appropriate Praxis Exam, the candidate is eligible for an Alabama Class A Certificate in Instructional Leadership.

Admission Requirements for Options 1 and 2

  1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education documented on an official transcript from degree granting institution.
    Official Transcripts from all university, college, and post-secondary institutions you attended must be mailed to:
    University of South Alabama Transcript Processing Center

    Watertown, MA 02471
    (Note: Students who attended and/or graduated from the University of South Alabama are not required to submit a USA transcript.)
  2. GPA Requirement.
    • Regular Admission – requires a minimal grade-point-average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale based on GPA calculated from degree granting institution.
    • Provisional Admission – requires a minimal grade-point-average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale based on GPA calculated from degree granting institution; or 2.75 GPA based on the last 60 semester hours of undergraduate coursework; or a Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Test score or Miller Analogies Test (MAT) score at or above the 50th percentile.
  3. A valid ALABAMA Class B or Class A Professional Educator Certificate in a teaching field or instructional support area.
  4. Three recommendations from the applicant’s principal and two supervisors attesting to candidate’s leadership and management potential must be on the following form and emailed to: jlett@southalabama.edu
  5. A minimum of three full years of full-time, satisfactory professional educational experience in a P-12 setting. Must be documented on Supplemental Experience Form that should be requested from Human Resources in your past/present employing school system (https://www.alsde.edu/sec/ec/Misc%20Docs/SUPPLEMENT%20exp.pdf).

  6. Completed copy (all forms) of the most recent performance appraisal to include the professional development component and evidence of ability to lead student achievement. (Upload in document area under Other in Web Admit portal.)
  7. Resume (vita) with a reverse chronology of the candidate’s professional employment history, including dates and locations (uploaded within application).
  8. Summary of candidate’s reasons for pursuing instructional leadership certification, including what the candidate expects from the preparation program. (Upload within application.)
  9. Submission of official GRE or MAT exam scores.
