SMARTHINKING ONLINE WRITING TUTORING SERVICE
What is it?
The University of South Alabama offers SMARTHINKING, an online tutoring service, to provide online writing support for students. Writing tutors are available to critique essays; assist with grammar and mechanics; assist with pre-writing; and help with research strategies and proper documentation. Over 90% of writing tutors hold a masters or doctorate in their writing intensive discipline. Many are current or former college instructors. All writing tutors are experienced in writing.
Where is it?
Students can access SMARTHINKING by logging on to the USA online page and then clicking on the Writing Tutor link located at the left-hand top of the page (if using eCollege). If using SAKAI, a SMARTHINKING link should be embedded in the course. An alternate log-on method is to enter the web site address: http://smarthinking.com. At the SMARTHINKING web site, the student must log on with his or her Jag number. The password is the last four digits of the social security number.
How it Works
Students submit essays or other written work for review at the SMARTHINKING Online Writing Lab. Students may submit a series of drafts based on feedback providing by writing tutors. Although different tutors respond when a student logs on at separate times, previous drafts and notes of the student’s work are available for review by subsequent tutors.
- When submitting questions to a tutor, it is helpful to cut and paste the directions for the assignment from the syllabus or other material into a SMARTHINKING comment box.
- If APA style writing is required, students can request a tutor with APA expertise.
