Recommended Teachers:

Comrades Of Courage always likes to recognize those teachers who go out of their way in accommodating students with special needs in the classroom. We recognize these individuals as uniquely qualified to be listed on our website as a “highly recommended instructors”.

Each teacher listed below is highly recommended by either members or staff. These instructors do not "dumb down" their curriculum for anyone—every course is still a challenge to get through—but the instructor is very willing to work with you on an individual basis to help you reach your educational goals.

If you come across an instructor who you feel deserves the C O C stamp of Highly Recommended and deserves to be listed on this site, email us the course name and the instructor so we can include them on the page!

This is an image of Dr. Glenn Sebastian.

Instructor: Dr. Glenn Sebastian

Website:
Courses Offered: GEO101, 102
Review:

Update! The big guy up and retired on us! Dr. Sebastian you will be missed by us. You have always been and always will be a link in the Chain Of Change. Goodluck!

Dr. Sebastian is very serious about Geography and this follows through into his animated lectures. The course is challenging for all students, but the course is also fun and informative. If one listens carefully and takes reasonable notes there is no reason to walk away with a poor grade or reallt less than an A. Four of our members, whom all have various special needs, tell us he is a delight to work with; he understands the need for having tests proctored or to be given verbally. Alternatives for those who are unable to complete the required lab work due to a disability are offered various and challenging replacements. We highly recommend this teacher for all Geography courses.

Image Of Dr. Eric Loomis

Instructor: Dr. Eric Loomis

Website: http://www.southalabama.edu/philosophy/loomis/index.htm
Courses Offered: PHL131, PHL461, PHL321
Review:
"This class is so interesting and thought provoking, I might change majors!", reports our VP. Dr. Loomis takes the time to work with all students individually and understands the need for test proctoring. The Philosophy department has a separate room with a computer for just such occurrences. The instructor accommodates most needs, such as test enlargement, special seating, and providing hard copies of overhead material (if it’s too small for you to read). Dr. Loomis is highly recommended as an instructor by members and staff of COC.

Image Of Dr. Nichole Amare

Instructor: Dr. Nichole Amare

Website: http://www.southalabama.edu/english/about/faculty/nicole_amare.htm
Courses Offered: EH371
Review:
You’re not likely to fall asleep in Dr. Amare’s class. She is high energy all the way. The classes are clear—no weird PhD mumbo-jumbo to be found here, just common sense approaches to teaching and learning. Let’s face it, if she can make English grammar exciting then you need to take her classes. She works well with all students including special needs students and will accommodate most needs. We highly recommend her for her energy, knowledge, and enthusiasm in the classroom.

Image Of Daniel LaBrier

Instructor: Daniel LaBrier

Website:
Courses Offered: Physics, PH101. PH104 Labs
Review:
Daniel really works hard to make sure all students understand the Physics lab materials. If you show interest in something, but just don't get it, he will take time to explain anything you have a question about. He works well with students who have a disability and will structure the lab exercises so that every student can participate. We give Daniel a high recommendation.

Image Of Dr. Martha Jane Brazy

Instructor: Dr. Martha Jane Brazy

Website: http://www.southalabama.edu/history/faculty/brazy/
Courses Offered: History, HY135, 136, 279, 390
Review:
Got history? Taking a history course from Dr. Brazy is akin to holding a twister by the tail. This is not to say her class is wild or crazy, or she herself is crazy; it means the classroom is very lively with diverse opinions and robust topics. Brazy encourages this type of discourse in the classroom in order to get at the real issues of history. Warning: This not a class for the politically closed-minded, nor is it a place for the bashful or easily embarrassed student; history is full of adult themes and they are discussed openly in her classroon. The class is fun and informative and Dr. Brazy takes time to work with all her students. She will accommodate all special needs students in her classroom. She is a highly recommended instructor. As a side note: Dr. Brazy is also one of our Academic Advisors and a close partner to the group.

Image Of Dr. Robert Coleman

Instructor: Dr. Robert Coleman

Website: http://www.southalabama.edu/english/about/faculty/bob_coleman.htm
Courses Offered: English
Review:
So you want to learn all about Literature eh? Well we can personally recommend this teacher. He is understanding and kind. His classroom is a joy for anyone who loves Literature like I do. There is give and take, you will not be lectured to in his class, but jouney together on the highway of learning. Coleman does accommodate all special needs students in his classroom. He is tough, but if you are in it for an education you want to learn and not waste time in the classroom. I highly recommend this teacher for all English Majors. PM

Image Of Sam Stutsman

Instructor: Sam Stutsman

Website:
Courses Offered: GEOL 101, 102
Review:
Mr. Stutsman work's well with all students and goes out of his way to insure his Lab Classroom is completely accessible. Our own President, Paul McGowan, who is visually impaired reports Mr. Stutsman, went so far as to make custom maps so that Paul could still participate in lab exercises fully. He highly recommends this instructor to any student with special needs.

Image Of Dr. R. Kent Clark

Instructor: Dr. R. Kent Clark

Website:
Courses Offered: Physics, PH101, PH115, PH202
Review:
PH101- Astronomy is not for the faint of heart! Dr. Clark’s class is really tough, but what we like most about him is that he works with students with disabilities such as the visual impaired. Don’t think it’s a free ride though, because in his class you are going to have to work hard. Learning about the universe is made fasinating in Dr. Clark's classroom. We recommend him for his willingness to work towads solutions for all students.

Image Of Mr. Thomas Lakeman

Instructor: Mr. Thomas Lakeman

Courses Offered: English
Website: http://www.thomaslakeman.com/
Review:

Thomas is a very knowledgeable, entertaining, and accessible instructor. His impressions are downright uncanny and accurate. The courses themselves are well thought out and quite informative. Two COC members have taken him and have reported that he is both well-informed and affable. He is always willing to go the extra mile for his students. He is an instructor we highly recommend

Instructor: Dr.John Halbrooks

Courses Offered: English
Website:
Review:

So you say you want to learn a little about Medieval and Renaissance literature? John Halbrooks is your ticket to kickin’ it old school style! Beowulf, Chaucer, and Sir Gawain never had it so good. This professor is awesome; he knows his stuff and has a razor sharp sense of humor that keeps the class incredibly alert……that’s right no naps and waking up to a drool pool. You will walk away from this class with a newfound respect for the literature of Old and Middle English, guaranteed!
