Marcy Matherne

Director

Marcy Matherne recently returned to South after a brief retirement. Prior to her retirement, she served as the Director of the Center for Continuing Education and Conference Services from 1985 until 2013. As the Director, she oversees the wide variety of programs offered through the Center. She enjoys the range of programs and the diversity of audiences served. Marcy received a Bachelor’s Degree from West Virginia University and a Master’s Degree from Louisiana State University. In her spare time she enjoys painting, reading and sometimes, cooking.

Laurent Cadden

Program Director

Laurent Cadden has the pleasure of working with the University of South Alabama Road Scholar program, a travel learn program for adults, Odyssey, USA, a local program for adults who enjoy continuing to learn and the Photography Certificate program. She received a degree in Economics with a Business Concentration from Hollins University. Reading, spending time at the Bay and traveling are just some of the activities Laurent enjoys.

Joy Aull

Program Director

Professional Development

Joy is excited about joining the innovative team at the Center for Continuing Education and Conference Services. She brings 25 years of experience in collaborating with federal, state and local agencies in addition to university/college officials to implement strong preemptive community education and professional development programs. She enjoys taking multidisciplinary projects from conception to implementation. Due to the extensive time Joy spent living and traveling internationally, she is adept at working with diverse groups. Joy graduated from Hardin Simmons University with a Bachelors of Behavioral Science. She has worked as a mentor, parole officer, training coordinator, university administrator, consultant and police captain. Joy has multiple mental health, emergency response, and public safety instructor certifications. Joy and her husband have three children and together they enjoy cooking, traveling, and outdoor activities.

Paul Phillips

Lead Instructor

Safety and Emergency Management

Paul Phillips is the head instructor and program director of the University of South Alabama’s Safety and Emergency Response Training department. He has been with the program since 2003 and has a wide range of emergency response training and experience. Paul has an associate’s degree in fire science and has been a firefighter since 1998. He is currently employed with the City of Mobile’s Fire Department since 2000 and is a Captain assigned to the Hazardous Materials Unit where he has obtained certification as a Hazmat Technician and a Weapons of Mass Destruction Technician and Incident Safety Officer. He also is an OSHA Outreach instructor and is qualified to teach a variety of safety classes. In addition, he spent 4 years performing search and rescue operations in the United States Coast Guard where he holds a USCG Maritime Captains license. Overhaul, Paul’s combined education, training, and work experience enable him to instruct students to become safety and emergency response professionals.

Lisa Simon

Support Staff, Center for Continuing Education

Lisa has been with the University of South Alabama for twenty-three years.  She joined the Center for Continuing Education in January of 2017.  Lisa provides program and registration support for the department.

Alma Platt

Support Staff, Center for Continuing Education

Alma has been with USA since October 1997. Most of that time she worked within the College of Medicine. She joined the staff of the Center of Continuing Education September 2012. She and her husband live on a small farm, they have two children and two grandchildren.
