OIE was created in November of 2013. The office leads university-wide activities related to planning, assessment, and compliance and supports the planning and assessment efforts of all academic and administrative units at the University of South Alabama. Examples of activities include but are not limited to university strategic planning and strategic plan assessment, academic program review, annual assessment of student learning outcomes, and assessment of general education outcomes. The office also maintains and supports technology systems to support planning and assessment work across the University including tracdat, the assessment software system, and Class Climate, the tool used for student evaluations of teaching and survey administration.
Beyond planning and assessment, OIE supports USA’s compliance with SACS-COC and NC-SARA/State Authorization for distance education. OIE also supports other academic units with specialized program accreditation when needed.
Other areas of responsibility for OIE include: managing the Faculty Handbook, updating the University Bulletin for Academic Affairs, and serving as the liaison to the Alabama General Studies Committee.

|Mary Angela Coleman, PhD
Associate Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness
|Dr. Mary Angela Coleman, Associate Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness, has been with the University of South Alabama since November 2013. A native of Wilmington, DE, she has held positions as a non-profit administrator, instructor of English, professor of educational research, and higher education administrator (click here for CV). She holds a B.A. in English from James Madison University, an M.A. in Creative Writing from Temple University, and a Ph.D. in Educational Research and Evaluation from Virginia Commonwealth University. Her research interests include the development and validation of assessments and identifying factors and best practices contributing to a healthy culture of assessment and continuous improvement in the university.|
Director of Assessment
|Cecelia G. Martin has been the Director of Assessment since 2008 and began working at USA in 1991. Prior to this, she worked in Institutional Research and as a Research Associate in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work. Ms. Martin also teaches sociology courses part-time. She has a B.S. degree in Medical Technology and a M.A. in Sociology. Her research interests focus on student academic success, general education assessment with a particular emphasis on the assessment of writing and transforming data into practice.|
Institutional Effectiveness Coordinator
|Brandi Gilliam, Institutional Effectiveness Coordinator, joined the University of South Alabama’s Office of Institutional Effectiveness in December 2017. Prior to joining the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Brandi served as a Program Specialist with USA’s Coastal Resource and Resiliency Center. She has worked closely with Community Health Workers in Alabama and Louisiana while presenting Disaster Preparedness/ Emergency Management modules at Lay Health Worker trainings along the gulf coast. She holds a B.S. degree in English from the University of West Alabama and a Masters of Public Administration (M.P.A.) degree from the University of South Alabama. Her research interests include assessing the needs of underserved and disadvantaged populations in gulf coast communities. Her primary tasks include the coordination of Class Climate surveys, strategic planning, and state authorizations|
