The
College
of
Engineering
at the
University
of
South Alabama
invites applications for four graduate
research assistantship positions at the
Master’s level. The research assistantship
will offer a full tuition and a competitive
stipend.
Successful
candidates will pursue a Master degree in
Mechanical Engineering or Electrical
Engineering with a research focus in
composite materials. We are seeking
motivated graduate students to conduct our
research in one of the following areas
depending on his/her interest:
Research
Assistantship in Nondestructive Evaluation
of Polymer Composites
This
research assistant will conduct research in
composites processing, defect
characterization, mechanical testing,
ultrasound, acoustic emission, thermograph,
damage evolution, thermal cycling and
microcracking, and health monitoring of
polymer composites. Strong background in
materials characterization, composites
manufacturing, mechanical testing, composite
mechanics, instrumentation, and statistical
analysis is essential.

Research Assistantship
in Mechanical Strength & Life Modeling
of Polymer Composites
This research assistant will conduct research on multi-scale
testing and modeling high strain rate and
fracture behavior of polymer composites, as
well as their mechanical strength and
fatigue life. Strong background in solid
mechanics, fracture mechanics, finite
element analysis, and mechanical testing is
essential.

Research Assistantship
in Polymer Composites Processing
This research assistant will conduct research in polymeric
composites manufacturing and analyze the
data collected during and after the
processes. Strong background in fluid
mechanics, heat transfer, and mechanics of
materials is essential.
Experiences in LabView, MatLab,
ANSYS, and numerical analysis techniques are
preferred.

Research
Assistantship in Polymer-based
Nanocomposites Processing
This research assistant will conduct experimental research in
polymeric nanocomposite fabrication, carried
out in collaboration with Drs. Hsiao and Gou
listed above. Although the focus will be on
the mechanical aspects of nanocomposites, a
strong candidate would have, ideally, a
strong practical background in the electric,
magnetic, and dielectric properties of
solids.
Experience with MatLab, and other
numerical analysis software would also be an
advantage.
