GY461 Computer Mapping & GIS Technology
Student Projects
Students taking GY461/GEO461 are required to complete individual
geologic maps at 1:24,000 USGS quadrangle scale based upon active research
in the southern Appalacian Orogenic Belt, or in the Llano Uplift of central
Texas. The
geology is digitized from stable USGS topographic base maps, and field maps
with sketched geologic data. Structural data is entered into a relational
database and is plotted automatically based on geodetic coordinates. The
AutoCAD Map 2000/ArcGIS 9.0 GIS is used to code and color lithologic
polygons to produce the below maps. Many of the below maps will eventually
be published by the Alabama
Geological Survey 7.5' Geologic Map series.
