Research and Teaching Interests
Martha Jane Brazy joined the History Department faculty in 1999 and serves as Coordinator of Graduate Studies in History as well as Director for USA's interdisciplinary program, Gender Studies. Her research focuses on nineteenth-century U.S. social history with an emphasis on the South, African-American history, slavery, and multicultural women's history in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. While at USA, Professor Brazy has taught both halves of the U.S. History survey, African-American Experiences, the Historical Roots of Contemporary Issues, the History of Feminist Movements, African-American Women's History, and Slavery in the U.S. Her current research explores the life of the late African-American poet, social critic, and activist, June Jordan. Professor Brazy is also compiling a collection of slave women's narratives.
