Honors Program

On Halloween Night, students from across all disciplines and from many different backgrounds joined forces to go trick-or-treating. Instead of getting candy, they collected cans for the Bay Area Food Bank and books for the children of underprivileged families. This event, known as “Ghouls for Good” was centralized in the Seaman’s Bethel Theatre, the building of the USA Honors Program, and was likewise hosted by the Honors Program Organization and the Mortar Board. Ghouls for Good was organized by HPO President, Sid King, with the assistance of Mortar Board President, Jake Walker. HPO Officers, Chris Buchanan, Mary Bishop, Nikki Reed, Tyler Bell, Lauren Gessner, and Amy Traylor were all instrumental in making Ghouls for Good a reality.

To date, Ghouls for Good 2011 has been the largest service project in HPO history. The upstairs area in the Bethel was loaded down with stacks upon stacks of canned goods and piles of books following the project. Various departments, such as the Earth Sciences Department and CIS Department collected cans in class to support the event. The unofficial numbers as of November 3 rd were 2554 cans collected, 441 books collected, and a $100 check made payable to the Bay Area Food Bank.

Many campus organizations besides HPO were well represented, and had a large number of members helping and dedicated to the project, itself. These organizations were the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Alpha Epsilon Delta, The Jaguar Marching Band, Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, The Biology Student Association, Mortar Board, Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, and the BMD Society. With over 110 participants, Ghouls for Good is guaranteed to be a cornerstone project for HPO in many years to come, and only great things are expected in the future.
