The International Society for Heart Research invites nominations for the Research Achievement Award.  This is a very distinguished Award of international importance which will be a highlight of the World Congresses of the ISHR.  Details of the competition are as follows:

  1. The purpose of this Award is to recognize a prominent scientist who has a distinguished track record of innovative scientific contributions that have had a major impact on our understanding and/or treatment of cardiovascular disease and who is likely to continue to make major contributions in the future.  Thus, the main criteria for selecting awardees are scientific excellence and potential for future research contributions.
  1. The Award will consist of a plaque and a monetary prize of $20,000, which will be used to support the research program of the awardee.
  1. The winner will be announced at the World Congress of the ISHR (Kyoto, Japan, May 13-16, 2010), where he/she will present a major lecture.
  1. A photograph and biosketch of the winner will be published in Heart News and Views, and will be posted in the ISHR website.
  1. Candidates must be active members (or have applied for membership) of the International Society for Heart Research (membership application forms are available on the ISHR website at www.ishrworld.org or from Dr. Metin Avkiran, Cardiovascular Division, King's College London, The Rayne Institute, St. Thomas' Hospital, London SE1 7EH, United Kingdom).

  2. While both the Outstanding Investigator Award (OIA) and the Research Achievement Award (RAA) recognize established investigators, the OIA (presented annually) is targeted at more junior individuals (at least Assistant/Associate Professor or the equivalent; normally < 50 years old), while the RAA (presented triennially at the World Congress) is targeted at more senior individuals (full Professors or the equivalent; normally > 50 years old).

  3. Previous winners of the Research Achievement Award (more senior individuals) will not be eligible for the Outstanding Investigator Award.  In addition, the recipient of any Society Award (the Outstanding Investigator Award, the Research Achievement Award, the Peter Harris Distinguished Scientist Award) is ineligible to receive any other Society Award for a period of 6 years.

  4. The Award carries with it a requirement to attend the World Congress of the ISHR at which the award will be presented.   Travel expenses will not be reimbursed (at the discretion of the winner, these expenses can be supported by the Award).  The registration fee will be waived.

  5. Nominations must include the following materials:
  • A letter (maximum two pages) describing the candidate’s research achievements.  Letters proposing a nomination are most helpful if they deal as specifically as possible with the candidate’s most important contributions to science.  Academic rank or administrative service will not be taken into account by the Selection Committee.
  • A curriculum vitae containing a bibliography which is abbreviated to list only the candidate’s most important publications (maximum of 20). If a particular paper is referred to in the nominating letter, this paper must be included in the abbreviated bibliography.
  • Reprints of five of the candidate’s most significant publications.

All of these items should be provided in electronic format, as PDF files, on a single CD. A printed copy of the nomination letter, with original signature, should also accompany the nomination.

10.  Self-nominations will not be considered.

11.  Nominations should be sent to Dr. Metin Avkiran, Cardiovascular Division, King's College London, The Rayne Institute, St. Thomas' Hospital, London SE1 7EH, United Kingdom, Phone +44 20        7188 3899, Fax +44 20 7188 0970.
