The International Society for Heart Research invites nominations for the Peter Harris Distinguished Scientist Award.  Details of the competition are as follows:

  1. This very distinguished Award of international importance is the highlight of each World Congress of the ISHR.   It is a lifetime award that recognizes senior investigators with a consistent record of major scientific achievements in the field of cardiovascular research. Since the inauguration of the Research Achievement Award in 2001, the Peter Harris Award has been refocused to recognize and reward lifetime contributions to science.  In general, candidates for the Peter Harris Award would normally be over 60 years of age, reflecting their sustained contributions over an extended period.
  1. The Award will consist of a plaque and an honorarium of $5,000.
  1. The winner will be announced at the World Congress of the ISHR, where he/she will present a major lecture.
  1. A photograph and biosketch of the winner will be published in Heart News and Views, and will be posted in the ISHR website.
  1. Candidates must be active members (or have applied for membership) of the International Society for Heart Research (membership application forms are available on the ISHR website at www.ishrworld.org or from Dr. Metin Avkiran, Cardiovascular Division, King's College London, The Rayne Institute, St. Thomas' Hospital, London SE1 7EH, United Kingdom).
  1. The Award carries with it a requirement to attend the World Congress of the ISHR (Kyoto, Japan, May 13-16, 2010).   Travel expenses will be reimbursed up to a maximum of $1,500 [to include coach class travel and a maximum of 3 nights’ hotel accommodation] when the Award recipient delivers the lecture at a World Congress in his/her region, and up to a maximum of $3,000 when inter-continental travel is required.  The registration fee will be waived.
  1. Nominations must include the following materials:
  • A letter (maximum two pages) describing the candidate’s research achievements. Letters proposing a nomination are most helpful if they deal as specifically as possible with the candidate’s most important contributions to science. Academic rank or administrative service will not be taken into account by the Selection Committee.
  • A curriculum vitae containing a bibliography which is abbreviated to list only the candidate’s most important publications (maximum of 20). If a particular paper is referred to in the nominating letter, this paper must be included in the abbreviated bibliography.
  • Reprints of five of the candidate’s most significant publications.

All of these items should be provided in electronic format, as PDF files, on a single CD. A printed copy of the nomination letter, with original signature, should also accompany the nomination.

  1. Self-nominations will not be considered.
