Dear Colleague:

The International Society for Heart Research (ISHR) has established four very distinguished awards of international importance for recognizing outstanding scientists who have made significant contributions to the advancement of cardiovascular science: The Richard J. Bing Award for Young Investigators, the Outstanding Investigator Award, the Research Achievement Award, and the Peter Harris Distinguished Scientist Award. This portfolio of awards was designed to cover the entire spectrum of the academic landscape, so as to include scientists at every stage of their development. Thus, while the Richard Bing Award recognizes young talent, the Peter Harris Award focuses on lifelong accomplishments. Both the Research Achievement Award (RAA) and the Outstanding Investigator Award (OIA) are targeted at scientists in the intermediate phase of their career; the RAA (targeted at more senior individuals who are full Professors or the equivalent) is bestowed triennially at World Congresses whereas the OIA (targeted at more junior individuals who are Assistant/Associate Professors or the equivalent) is given annually. The monetary prize for the Richard Bing Award for Young Investigators, the Outstanding Investigator Award, and the Peter Harris Distinguished Scientist Award is $5,000. The monetary prize for the Research Achievement Award is $20,000, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Chugai Pharmaceutical Company.

In addition, the ISHR has established three named lectures, the Keith Reimer Distinguished Lecture (which focuses on myocardial ischemia and metabolism, coronary hemodynamics, vascular biology and contractile mechanisms), the Janice Pfeffer Distinguished Lecture (which focuses on cardiac remodeling, failure, and hypertrophy), and the President's Distinguished Lecture (which focuses on molecular and cell biology, genetics, genomics and proteomics).  Each of these lectures is intended to be a high-profile event and is scheduled as a keynote plenary lecture at ISHR World Congresses and Section meetings. Each Distinguished Lecture carries a monetary prize of $1,000.

The Distinguished Lectures are delivered at the ISHR World Congress or at the annual meetings of the three largest ISHR Sections in non-Congress years on a rotating basis (2008-2011 schedule).

Please follow the individual links above for details of each award, including specific eligibility criteria where appropriate. The following general rules apply:

Finally, in 2007 the ISHR Council approved the creation of an illustrious service award, the ISHR Distinguished Leader Award.  This prestigious award will be conferred annually to an individual who has made sustained outstanding contributions to accomplishing the mission and advancing the objectives of the ISHR.  In non-Congress years, the award will be presented at the Section meeting to which the recipient belongs.  The award winner will be recognized as a distinguished leader in the ISHR.  This award carries a monetary prize of $1,000.

As always, your feedback regarding the ISHR awards is appreciated. Please email your comments/suggestions to metin.avkiran@kcl.ac.uk.
