Society
.
- Started as an "International Study
Group for Research in Cardiac Metabolism" in
Dubrovnik, 1968 and in 1976 in Tokyo adopted the name
"International Society for Heart Research".
- Over the years, membership has grown to
include over 3,000 members.
- The society has 7 sections
(Australasian, Chinese, European, Indian, Japanese, Latin
American and North American).
- To date 19 world congresses of the ISHR
have been held (Dubrovnik, 1968; Gargona, 1969; Stowe.
1970; Geneva, 1971; Winnipeg. 1972; Freiburg, 1973;
Quebec, 1974; Tokyo, 1976; New Delhi, 1978; Moscow, 1980;
London, 1983; Melbourne, 1986; Ann Arbor, 1989; Kobe,
1992; Prague, 1995; Rhodes 1998; Winnipeg 2001; Brisbane
2004; Bologna 2007) and two future World Congresses are
also scheduled (Kyoto in 2010 and San Diego in 2013).
- The society has developed a number of
important awards (Peter Harris Distinguished Scientist
Award, Research Achievement Award, Outstanding
Investigator Prize and Richard Bing Award and Travel
-Awards for Young Investigators); publishes its own
journal (Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology.
Editor: David Eisner) and has its own newsletter (Heart
News and Views, Editor: Leslie Anderson Lobaugh).
Goals and Objectives....
Our mission is to to promote
the discovery and dissemination of knowledge in the
cardiovascular sciences on a world-wide basis through
publications, congresses and other media. That will be
accomplished by the following:
- To promote the exchange of ideas on a
world-wide basis between scientists and clinicians
interested in all aspects of cardiovascular biology and
medicine.
- To promote discovery and dissemination of
knowledge in all areas of cardiovascular biology and
medicine.
- To organize and support national and
international congresses devoted to all aspects of
cardiovascular research.
- To provide an international forum for
discussion of problems and controversies at the cutting
edge of cardiovascular research.
- To publish a world class journal devoted
to advances in cardiovascular research.
Membership....
- Membership is open to any individual (with
or without MD or Ph.D.) who is actively interested in any
aspect of experimental or clinical research in the
cardiovascular system.
- To join the ISHR simply complete the online membership form and you will be contacted by your Section
Secretary. Your membership will become active upon
confirmation of dues payment.
- Advantages of membership include: Reduced
registration fee at Section Meetings and World Congresses
(this alone more than pays for the annual membership
fee). Reciprocal membership privileges with other
ISHR sections. Reduced personal subscription rates to the
Journal of
Molecular and Cellular Cardiology. (This also, in itself, more than pays for the
membership fees). Free subscription to the ISHR
bulletin, Heart News and Views. Eligibility for the Peter Harris Award,
the Research Achievement Award, the Outstanding
Investigatory Prize, the Richard Bing Young Investigator
Award, and Travel Awards at World Congresses. Eligibility
for the newly-established Fellowship of the ISHR (a
distinction bestowed to a select number of outstanding
scientists). Being listed in the worldwide ISHR
membership directory.
