Benefits

Stipends are as follows for 2009-2010

PGY-1:  $45,656

PGY-2:  $47,258

PGY-3:  $49,011

PGY-4:  $50,754

Med-Peds residents receive all of the benefits provided to residents of both categorical programs.

Some of the benefits are as follows:

Meetings: $1500 toward a pediatric review course is provided in the final year of residency if conference attendance is maintained at a high level.

Insurance: Housestaff and family are offered a Shared-Cost health and dental care plan.  Term life insurance is provided at no cost, including accidental death and dismemberment coverage.  Liability coverage is provided at no cost.  Long Term disability insurance is provided at no cost.

Books: The Internal Medicine department provides all 2nd year residents with a copy of MKSAP.  The pediatric deparment provides AAP PREP question books and materials yearly.  A 10% discount is provided to residents at the USA Book store.

Tuition reimbursement: Partial tuition reimbursement is available for self, spouse and children at the University of South Alabama after 6 months of employment

Moving/Relocation Allowance:  Resident moving to Mobile are provided a moving allowance of $2 per mile with a  cap of $1200.

Meals:  A 25% discount is given on all food in the hospital cafeterias.  A reimbursement of $5 per call period is added to paycheck quarterly.

Parking: Parking adjacent to all USA hospitals is provided at no cost.

Vacation:  Four weeks (20 days) of paid vacation are provided per 12 month year.  For Med-Peds residents, this is divided into 2 weeks on the Medicine side, and 2 weeks on the Pediatric side during each 12 month period. 

Sick Leave:  During each 12 month period of employment, 12 days of paid sick leave are allowed.

Lab Coats:  Three lab coats and three sets of scrubs are provided free of charge at the beginning of the first year of  training.  In each additional year, residents may choose one free lab coat or 2 free sets of scrubs.

Recreational Facilities:  Residents have use of the USA Recreational Center, Tennis courts and Swimming Pool.

Memberships:  Interns are provided ACP membership free for their first year.

The pediatric department provides both hard copies of the PREP curriculum each year and online access.
