University of South Alabama College of Nursing
DNP Nurse Educator Subspecialty
Nurse and patient

The College of Nursing is proud to offer a DNP Nurse Educator Option as a subspecialty to any DNP program of study. The Nurse Educator courses are designed for Advanced Practice Nurses who wish to earn the DNP and gain Nurse Educator preparation simultaneously.

Faculty shortages in nursing programs are limiting the number of student admissions at a time when the need for nurses continues to grow. Financial constraints, aging faculty, and increasing competition for clinical sites have also contributed to this potential crisis.

Most doctoral programs do not offer courses in nursing education as part of their basic curriculum which leaves many of the nurses qualified to fill faculty vacancies poorly prepared to function in the classroom after graduation.

Whether your current or future position involves nursing education in the campus or clinical environment, we have a plan to help you develop or improve your teaching skills.

The College of Nursing is pleased to announce that we were recently awarded funding for the Nurse Faculty Loan Program. This funding is available for all MSN or DNP students, regardless of specialty, provided they take the nurse educator course work and get employment after graduation as a nurse educator. The funding is awarded as a loan, not a scholarship or grant. Up to 85% of the loan is forgiven over a four year period after graduation provided the recipient is employed as a nursing faculty member in a school/college of nursing. If you are interested in discussing the loan requirements or applying for the funding, please contact Dr. Cathy Dearman, Associate Dean for Research and Development at 251-445-9426 OR email her at
