1. If you wouldn’t do it in the US, it’s probably not a good idea to do it abroad
2. Use protection if engaging in sexual activity (STDs exist everywhere).
3. Do Not go anywhere with people you don’t know….no matter how much they smile at you, seem interested in the United States, or want to practice Spanish, French, German, Russian, etc, with you.
4. Try your best to avoid traveling alone. That safety in number rules translates outside the US.
5. Whether or not you are alone or with a group, avoid short cuts, alleys, deserted places (sounds common sense right?)
6. Don’t go to bars or clubs alone.
7. Don’t flash expensive jewelry, cameras, or laptops. Actually….if it would be devastating for you, if someone stole it, leave it alone.
8. Remember that just because you put something in your suitcase doesn’t mean it will be with you when you arrive (Airport corruption).
9. Never lay your license, passport, credit card, etc anywhere, and always know where these things are.
10. Never ride in a taxi alone, especially at night (you may not make it to your destination).
11. Try to avoid public intoxication, especially when alone. It makes you an easy target.
12. Don’t “look” lost, even if you are. If you must look at a map, do it quickly and conspicuously.
13. Try your best to blend in. Dress like everyone else. I know you are proud to be an American, but anything that shouts this will make you a target. This is not the time to show off.
14. If you wouldn’t do it in the US, it’s probably not a good idea to do it abroad. (repeated due to importance)
