Clery Act

The University of South Alabama has an enrollment of over 14,000 full time and part time, undergraduate, graduate and doctorate level students. Of these students approximately 2,600 live in our resident halls. The University is a multi-campus institution employing approximately 5,400 staff and faculty. The information provided in this report will reflect our Security Policies and Procedures and our Crime Statistics. Security Administration

The Chief of Police heads the University Police Department and reports to the Vice President of Student Affairs.

Security Screening of Applicant's For Employment

The University's Human Resources Department currently screens job applicants and conducts criminal and past employment histories on all prospective employees. A signed background release form is required for employment.

University Police Department

The Department is led by the Chief of Police, the Deputy Chief of Police, followed by an Administrative Lieutenant and a Patrol Lieutenant. It is further comprised of two Patrol Sergeants, four Patrol Corporals, a Detective Sergeant, two Detectives, eighteen Police Officers, eight Dispatchers, five Security Officers, five Parking Services workers, two clerks, and three Student Employees. University Police have full police powers granted by the State of Alabama (Title 16-22-1 and 2). Police matters are handled within the department, including arrest, initial complaint taking and criminal investigations. Crime reports are routinely submitted to both state and federal law enforcement authorities through the Alabama and National Crime Information Center. Crime reports are submitted to local law enforcement as needed for cooperative or mutual investigative purposes. In emergencies or at the request of University Police, Alabama State Law Enforcement agencies, Federal Law Enforcement agencies, and Local Law Enforcement agencies provide assistance as needed. University Police have reciprocal working relationships between each of the agencies at all levels of government. Crime incidents occurring on campus will be reported to the University Police Department. Crime incidents occurring off campus should be reported to the local agency that has law enforcement jurisdiction. University Police will assist students in reporting crime incidents to the proper agencies when applicable.
