Undergraduate Students
 
The Department offers scholarships and paper awards for undergraduates. Read below to see whether you qualify. Everyone who qualifies is encouraged to apply.

Scholarships

Two USA Foundation Sociology Scholarships and two USA Foundation Anthropology Scholarships, each in the amount of $750, will be awarded for the 2005 – 2006 Academic Year.

 

 

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be a junior or senior enrolled at USA, majoring in sociology or anthropology. You must enroll in the Fall 2005 to receive the award.
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Submit an essay on your career goals.
  • Submit two (2) letters of recommendation from USA faculty (at least one from a faculty member outside your major).
  • Paper Awards

The Department will also present one Sociology Student Paper Award and one Anthropology Student Paper Award, each in the amount of $50. Currently enrolled undergraduates (of any major) should submit papers meeting the following criteria:

  • The student must be the sole author of the paper.
  • The paper must substantially cover a topic from a sociological or anthropological perspective. Examples include reviews or syntheses of the discipline’s literature, original observations, or research reports.

Graduate Students
 
Scholarship

The USA Foundation Graduate Sociology Scholarship, worth $2,000, will be awarded to a Sociology graduate student for the 2005 – 2006 Academic Year.

To be eligible, you must:

  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Submit an essay on your career goals.
  • Submit two (2) letters of recommendation from faculty.
  • Enroll in the Fall 2005 to receive the award. Students with Assistantships at that time are not eligible.
  • Paper Award

The Department will also present one Sociology Graduate Student Paper Award in the amount of $50. Currently enrolled graduate students (from any discipline) should submit papers meeting the following criteria:

  • The student must be the sole author of the paper.
  • The paper must substantially cover a topic from a sociological perspective. Examples include reviews or syntheses of the discipline’s literature, original observations, or research reports.

Outstanding Student Awards
 
The Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work also offers awards in the amount of $250 to two students selected as the outstanding student majoring in either sociology or anthropology, and to the outstanding graduate student and the outstanding gerontology student. These awards are selected by a faculty committee and there is not an application process.
