Electronic Interlibrary Loan
If, perhaps, you haven't noticed, there is a new blue button on the University Library Homepage entitled ILL. From this webpage students, faculty and staff are able to request interlibrary loans for either articles(photocopies) or books and renewals. (Please remember that the faculty, staff and students of the colleges of Medicine and Allied Health must use the Biomedical Library for all ILL.)
NOTIS Catalog Updated
In August an updated version of the library's NOTIS computer system was installed. The new software provides Y2K compliance and promises refinements that should eventually permit improved services especially in the Circulation module. One improvement which you can see now is the listing of Course Reserve materials. By typing "CR" in the catalog, the user can see what items have been placed on Course Reserve and whether they are currently available. Besides being easier to use than the old printouts, the holdings are updated constantly rather than once a week.
One of the problems with the new update is that we have lost our ability to allow holds and recalls on books that are currently checked out. These functions should be restored when a program fix is installed over the Christmas holidays.
The library hopes to get a new client-server system within the next few years, since Ameritech, the NOTIS provider plans to eventually discontinue support for the mainframe catalog system.
Library Gets More Computers
Thanks to Mr. Moulton, the University President, the University Library has received 15 more Internet-connected computers for students to use for research--four in the Lobby, five in Reference, five on the Second floor and one multimedia computer in the Instructional Media Center on the Ground floor. These new computers are all networked to a laser printer behind the Circulation Desk where printouts can be picked up at a cost of 5¢ a page.
