June 20, 2000 . The electronic newsletter of the University Library, University of South Alabama, published irregularly as a service to the University Community.

We are pleased to announce that through cooperative efforts with the Network of Alabama Academic Libraries we now have web access to electronic journals in Elsevier's Science Direct database. Science Direct includes the full-text of many Elsevier, JAI, North Holland, and Pergamon journals subscribed to by NAAL libraries. The USA Libraries have print subscriptions to 151 of these journals, but by combining the subscriptions of all NAAL libraries, 627 journals are now available. This includes 476 that we did not previously have access to. Eventually full text will be available back to 1995, but at present the backfile varies by title.

Science Direct is available as a link on the University Library's website, SOUTHcat Plus (http://library.southalabama.edu). Click on "Electronic Indexes" or "Electronic Journals" and choose "Science Direct" then choose "group-wide login" (see the graphic above). Click on the "Journals" button at the top of the page to get to specific journals, available alphabetically by title and by subject. A small green page image next to the journal title indicates a subscribed journal. Click on titles and then issues you are interested in to see if full-text is available.

From the "Search" button you may do a search in ALL journals or just in predefined subject areas. An "Alert" service is also available after free registration.

MathSciNet and Ei Compendex databases provide direct links to Science Direct articles. Access to Science Direct is through USA domain name on campus only.

We hope you find Science Direct useful and convenient. Please let us know what you think. Call or e-mail Amy Prendergast at aprender@jaguar1.usouthal.edu, 460-7025 x2827 or Kathy Wheeler at kwheeler@jaguar1.usouthal.edu, 460-7025 x2830 with any questions or comments.
