Project Schedule.

Work on the new addition began January 7, 2002 with the removal of the trees and site work and should be completed in less than sixteen months, or by June 2003. Foundation work should be completed by March 2002.

Description.

The project consists of the construction of a new four-story, steel frame and architectural pre-cast concrete and glass-clad addition to the existing University Library. The addition should add approximately 54,000 sq. ft. to the University Library. The project features concrete spread footings, steel frame, cast-in-place concrete sheer walls, modified bituminous membrane roofing, steel deck/concrete composite floor plates, architectural pre-cast concrete exterior cladding, architectural curtain wall glazing, conventional interior finishes, mechanical and electrical systems connect to existing campus utilities.

Contracts awarded.

- Shell packages: site and concrete, masonry, pre-cast concrete, structural steel, caulking and waterproofing, roofing, plumbing, elevators, curtain wall (storefront and glazing)

- Interior packages: electrical, doors and hardware, gypsum board assemblies, ceilings, carpet and resilient flooring, ceramic tile, painting, heating and air-conditioning, plaster, and fireproofing.

- Demolition of the existing south entrance bridge

Features and Benefits.

  • Two new entrances on the east and west at the parking lot level
  • An atrium to connect the new and existing libraries; it will split into two story sections. The first atrium section will be about 22 feet tall and the second about 25 feet tall. Catwalks across the atium’s top floors will connect the top floors to each other. Two new elevators in the atrium area will be installed for the convenience of users..
  • 54,000 additional sq. ft. of space for book stacks, offices, study rooms, staff lounge, two elevators, three stairwells
  • An auditorium to seat over 100 persons
  • Two additional instructional classrooms, including a hands-on computer lab for teaching database searching
  • New circulation desk at ground level
  • The Instructional Media Center (IMC) will be combined with the new Program for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (PETAL) and occupy the prime area on the ground (first) floor. The PETAL will be developed to integrate technology into teaching and learning into the classroom, particularly with respect to multi-media.
  • Increase natural light through glass curtain walls on the north, east and west sides of the addition
  • 24 new group study rooms
  • Hundreds of additional network connections throughout the addition, including all group and individual study rooms
  • A new staff lounge
  • Latest fire protection and smoke evacuate system

Renovation Project

Phase one of renovation work will take place simultaneously with construction beginning Spring semester 2002 and continue through 2003 and include the following:

  • asbestos removal
  • installation of a sprinkler system
  • renovation of the ground (first) floor area to accommodate a new circulation desk and offices, reserve reading collection, reserve reading room, the renovation of two classrooms and collection management offices. In addition, library administration (dean’s suite) will be relocated to the first floor
  • painting, new carpeting, rewiring, etc., is included
