About the Child Language Lab

The USA Child Language Lab supports research in language development and process for children who are typically developing or language impaired. We are interested in language development for infants through school-aged children. 

If you are a parent interested in allowing your child to participate in research, please contact us.

Current Project
  • Disambiguation by Children with Specific Language Impairment: The Effects of Word and Context Factors

    • Children ages 3 years to 6 years, 11 months.
    • A disambiguation study looks at how a child interprets a speaker's intended use of a word.
    • The purpose of the research is to test word and context factors that affect the way children learn names of objects. The information gained by this investigation can lead to a better understanding of how language is learned and how to help children who have difficulties with language.

Dr. Brenda Beverly
  • Dr. Beverly is an Associate Professor of Speech-Language Pathology at the University of South Alabama and is a charter member of the Child Language Lab.

Dr. Julie Estis
  • Dr. Estis is also an Associate Professor of Speech-Language Pathology at the University of South Alabama and is a charter member of the Child Language Lab.

Lori Foran
  • Lori is doctoral candidate and certified speech-language pathologist with a background in pediatric speech and language disorders. Her research interests include the role of gesture on language development for children who are typically developing as well as for children with language impairment.

  • “My favorite childhood book is Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss.






 



Dongyin Mei
  • Dongyin is a doctoral student seeking a Ph.D in Speech and Hearing Science. She is from Southwest China and has a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Master of Arts in Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China.

  • When asked about her favorite childhood book she said, “I have really loved reading Arthur books since coming to America!”






 



Elizabeth Wesson
  • Elizabeth is a graduate student pursuing a degree in Speech-Language Pathology. She possesses a Bachelor of Arts degree is Music from UAB and a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech and Hearing Science from USA.

  • Elizabeth’s favorite childhood book is The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.






 



Karima Kemp
  • Karima is a graduate student pursing a Master’s degree is Speech-Language Pathology. She possesses a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech and Hearing Science from USA.

  • “My favorite books as a kid were any and all Nancy Drew mystery books. She’s my hero!”






 



Kayla Ford
  • Kayla is an undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech and Hearing Science. She will be graduating in May 2015 and has plans to attend graduate school at USA.

  • Kayla’s favorite childhood book is The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.






 



Tiffany Chavers
  • Tiffany is an undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree is Speech and Hearing Science. She will be graduating in May 2015. She has plans to attend graduate school in the fall.

  • Tiffany’s favorite childhood book is Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister.
