The University of South Alabama Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures invites applications for the position of Department Chair at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor. Qualifications include: 1) a Ph.D. in a foreign language, linguistics, or a closely related discipline with native or near-native ability in one of the department’s concentrations: French, German, Russian, or Spanish; 2) a distinguished record of scholarly publications and excellence in teaching and service and 3) effective leadership and interpersonal skills and relevant administrative experience. The chair will be expected to provide vision and creative leadership, to advance the department’s educational and research missions, to offer research mentoring to faculty, and to foster each of its language programs as the university builds a strong international presence.
A collegial working environment, the department has twelve full-time faculty members and is committed to both pedagogical innovation and advanced scholarship. Besides majors with concentrations in French, German, Spanish, and Russian, the department offers two years of Latin and two years of Classical Greek, as well as several additional languages via the Lesser Taught Languages program. It also offers graduate courses to students in the Alternative Master’s Program in the College of Education and participates in a Classical Studies minor in the College of Arts and Sciences. As part of the major in Foreign Languages, students are required to earn nine hours of credit abroad; the department administers its own summer program in Cuenca, Spain, and sends students to France, Germany and Russia. The department’s Language Resource Center provides technological resources and learning materials for its students, as well as tutorial assistance.
