What is Phi Alpha Theta?

Phi Alpha Theta is an international history honor and professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history, superior teaching and research, publication of such research, and the exchange of ideas among all students of history. History majors and non-majors are invited to become members at any time provided applicants meet the academic requirements outlined below. As a Phi Alpha Theta member for life, you are entitled to all of its privileges, including eligibility for academic awards offered through the organization.

In addition, Phi Alpha Theta offers conferences, workshops, and programs nationally which you may attend. You will also receive the quarterly journal, The Historian , which is included with your initiation fee and is renewable every year thereafter. The University of South Alabama chapter offers several events over the course of the academic year, such as a fall induction program, and in spring, in conjunction with the History Department Awards ceremony, the History Professor of the Year Award as well as various cash and book prizes to outstanding History majors and students.
