Message from the Chair
Dr. David Nelson
Chair of Mechanical Engineering
Welcome to the USA Mechanical Engineering Department!
Please take some time to look around our website. Whether your interest is in our educational programs, research, or professional activities, I hope you'll find the information you need here.
One of the questions I hear often is "What do mechanical engineers do?" My short --(and perhaps glib) response is "Everything that's important." The classic definition of mechanical engineering is the design of systems that transmit or convert forces and energy. That really doesn't tell you what mechanical engineers do, however. Mechanical engineers solve problems involving everything from aircraft to zirconium. We're the engineers who develop ways to generate energy from renewable sources. We design cleaner vehicles that use less fuel and emit fewer pollutants. Mechanical engineers work with biologists and physicians to find new technologies to treat disease and improve human health. We design systems to grow food more efficiently and safely. Mechanical engineers solve problems to make peoples' lives better.
I'm proud to be a mechanical engineer, and proud of the USA Mechanical Engineering Department. Thanks for touring our web site. If you are interested in finding out more about any of our programs, please send me an email. Better yet, come visit us. I'd love to show you around.
